The Ingredients of Quality Anger Management Classes

It is difficult for the untrained consumer of anger management to know the difference between a quality program and an inferior one.  Because anger management is a somewhat unregulated field, there are numerous ways it can be taught with educators of variying training, education and experience.  While I believe there are numerous approaches to learning skills in anger management, I believe there are a few key elements that must be included in any quality program or class.

First, a quality anger management class must include a client workbook for each participant.  Handouts or a “group therapy” talk session is not appropriate.  Anger management is a class which teaches skills, and these skills must be presented in a workbook.  A common workbook used is the one used by our organization, “Anger Management in the Twenty First Century” by Ari Novick, Ph.D. and Tony Fiore, Ph.D.

A good anger mangement program should include a pre/post assessement of a clients skills as well as look for anger, aggression and hostility traits.  There are various clinically proven assessements available, which include ones like the Novaco Provication Inventory, STAXI-2, and several others.

Classes should teach skills in the following areas: stress management, forgiveness, improving judgment and impulse control, empathy, expectation management, responding instead of reacting, taking time outs and cool downs, and improving communication and listening.

These classes should be taught by a well trained provider who is either a licensed psychotherapist with additional training or certification in anger management or a certified anger management professional who has been trained to teach these skills.

Consumers should expect that classes should be about 1-2 hours in length and be mixed gender.  All participants should receive a “proof of enrollment form” when they start and a “certificate of completion” when they finish.  Classes should be approximately 10 weeks for a live class and 10-20 hours for an online program for voluntary clients.
