Road Blocks to Communication- An Effective Anger Management Technique

Below are 8 of the most common roadblocks to communication.  These are the phrases to AVOID.roadblock

1. Ordering uses phrases like “You must…” or “You have to…”

2. Threatening uses phrases like “If you don’t, then…” or “You better or else…”

3. Preaching uses phrases like “It is your duty to…,” “You should…,” or “You ought to…”

4. Lecturing uses phrases like “ Let me tell you why you are wrong…,” or “Do you realize…”

5. Providing Answers uses phrases like “What I would do is…” or “It would be best if you…”

6. Judging uses phrases like “You are bad…lazy” that make a person feel like their character is being judged.

7. Diagnosing uses phrases like “You’re just trying to get attention…” or “I know what you need…”

8. Prying usually begins with questions asking “Why? What? How? When? Who?” and other prying type of questioning words.

Ultimately one needs to learn how to communicate assertively.  To learn skills in assertive communcation considering taking an anger management class or online anger management class.  These programs are an excellent resource to gaining one of life’s most valuable skills, good communication.
